On May 12 in Astana, Kazakhstan, Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) and Samruk-Kazyna, Kazakhstan's sovereign wealth fund, signed a strategic cooperation agreement. The signing ceremony was witnessed by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan.
Under the agreement, Masdar will develop:
1. A 500 MW "24/7" dispatchable renewable energy project to provide stable baseload power supply.
2. A 2 GW battery energy storage system (BESS), one of Central Asia's largest planned energy storage facilities.
This partnership aligns with Masdar's global strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 100 GW by 2030, with a current focus on Central Asia. The company is concurrently advancing a 1 GW wind power complex integrated with 600 MWh BESS in Kazakhstan's Zhambyl region, slated for construction launch in Q1 2026.
Kazakhstan has established a clear energy transition roadmap targeting 15% of its electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030, with plans to increase this proportion to 50% by 2050 and ultimately achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
The collaboration creates a strategic synergy between Masdar's technological expertise and Kazakhstan's decarbonization objectives.
