The New South Wales government has officially launched its sixth Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap tender, targeting the deployment of 1 GW of long-duration energy storage (LDES) systems with a minimum capacity of 8 GWh.

This initiative, managed by AEMO Services—a subsidiary of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)—aims to bolster grid reliability as coal-fired power plants phase out, ensuring stable electricity supply by 2034.

Registration closes on May 29, 2025, with full submissions due by June 10, 2025.

The tender process will adopt a two-stage evaluation procedure:

Stage 1 focuses on non-financial criteria, including social license commitments, deliverability, grid impact, and developer credibility.

Stage 2 evaluates the financial value for electricity consumers in New South Wales, prioritizing cost-effectiveness and long-term economic benefits.

Successful bidders will secure Long-Term Energy Service Agreements (LTESA), government-backed contracts that stabilize revenue streams and mitigate market risks.
