Georgia Power has initiated construction of battery energy storage systems (BESS) totaling 765MW in Georgia, approved through the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) process by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) to enhance grid flexibility and reliability.

The portfolio comprises four key projects:

1. Robins BESS (128 MW) in Bibb County: Utilizing existing infrastructure and engineered by Burns & McDonnell, scheduled to commence commercial operations in June 2026.

2. Moody BESS (49.5 MW) in Lowndes County: Developed by Crowder Industrial Construction with existing infrastructure integration, targeting May 2026 commercial operation.

3. Hammond BESS (57.5 MW) in Floyd County: Constructed by Crowder Industrial Construction, projected for November 2026 commissioning.

4. McGrau Ford BESS (530 MW) in Cherokee County: Phased development by Burns & McDonnell with Phase I and Phase II  planned for September and October 2026 operations respectively.

Georgia Power continues collaborating with PSC on statewide BESS procurement and development. Beyond these projects, the utility plans to:

  • Procure additional 1GW storage capacity through competitive solicitations.
  • Develop a 13MW demonstration project at Fort Stewart Military Base.
  • Implement a 50MW customer-sited solar and BESS pilot program under its 2025 IRP to advance distributed energy resources.
