Websol Energy System Ltd has secured a 21.9-hectare land parcel at Falta Industrial Park in West Bengal to build a new large-scale integrated solar manufacturing plant, marking a major expansion of its domestic renewable production capacity.
The greenfield facility will feature 4 GW of annual solar cell production capacity and 4 GW of solar module capacity, set to be developed in two equal 2 GW phases. This expansion builds on the company’s existing manufacturing footprint in West Bengal’s Falta Special Economic Zone (SEZ), where it already operates an established solar production base.
Websol highlighted that its long-standing local presence offers distinct operational advantages, including access to a skilled workforce, mature supplier networks and deep familiarity with the regional manufacturing ecosystem, which will accelerate the construction and commissioning of the new plant. The project will further strengthen the firm’s manufacturing dominance across eastern India’s renewable energy sector.
“Websol embarked on solar manufacturing in the mid-1990s, when India’s solar industry was still in its nascent stage. Today, solar power has become a cornerstone of the country’s energy infrastructure, and robust domestic manufacturing has never been more critical,” commented Sohan Lal Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Websol Energy System.
“This land allotment kicks off the next chapter of our three-decade journey in West Bengal. It enables us to scale up production significantly while leveraging our well-established local ecosystem, workforce and operational foundation. As India scales up national solar installations, domestic manufacturing capacity must expand in tandem to align with regional demand growth,” Agarwal added.
Sanjana Khaitan, Executive Director of Websol Energy System, stated that the company will now prioritize advancing the project through construction, full commissioning and commercial production following the official land allocation.
Founded in 1990, Websol is a veteran Indian solar cell and module manufacturer, listed on the country’s Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). Its product portfolio caters to both domestic and international markets, with solar cell supplies widely supporting local module makers to meet India’s Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) norms.
