Swiss renewable energy developer Delta Capacity has formally initiated construction works for its second large-scale battery energy storage facility in Finland, finalising the full lineup of key contractors and equipment suppliers for the landmark project.

Known as the Kärppiö battery energy storage system, the new asset boasts a capacity of 125 MW / 300 MWh and is situated in Teuva, western Finland, around 370 kilometres northwest of Helsinki. Jointly developed by Delta Capacity and the Strioga Family Foundation, the project will adopt core battery storage technology supplied by Sungrow. Commercial operation is scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2027, with Delta Capacity undertaking long-term asset management responsibilities upon completion.

The project has assembled a professional regional and global supply and construction team. In addition to Sungrow’s core BESS equipment provision, Nordic electrification specialist NEPower will deliver full balance-of-plant services, covering on-site electrification construction and substation engineering works. Local Finnish engineering firm Despro has also come on board as the regional technical partner to support project implementation.

Distinct from the financing mechanism applied to Delta Capacity’s earlier AKKU One scheme, the Kärppiö project will adopt an innovative revenue model. The developer has secured a partial tolling agreement with Centrica Energy, which will conduct intelligent asset optimisation and cross-border power trading across Nordic energy markets to maximise project economic value.

Delta Capacity’s Nordic energy portfolio continues to expand with the parallel progress of two major storage projects. The 125 MW / 300 MWh AKKU One battery facility, located in Lapinlahti approximately 450 kilometres northeast of Helsinki, is also under active construction.

Acquired by Delta Capacity as a fully permitted, ready-to-build project from Helios Nordic Energy, AKKU One will also deploy Sungrow’s advanced BESS solutions, with the specific technical configurations yet to be publicly disclosed.

Patrik Hes, Chief Executive Officer of Delta Capacity, emphasised the strategic significance of the dual-project development. “The simultaneous advancement of the Kärppiö and AKKU One schemes demonstrates our capability to deliver high-standard, large-scale energy storage assets efficiently through robust domestic and international collaboration,” he stated. “Together, these two projects with a combined 600 MWh capacity mark a key milestone in our long-term strategic cooperation and solidify our market position in the Nordic renewable energy sector.”

The two flagship storage developments also fully fulfil a major framework partnership between Delta Capacity and Sungrow. The pair inked a 1 GWh strategic cooperation agreement earlier this year, and the equipment supply for the two Finnish battery projects has now completely delivered on the agreed cooperation scale, laying a solid foundation for further joint renewable energy expansion in Northern Europe.
