Zenergy Secures EIA Approval for RMB 10bn 50GWh Sodium-ion Battery Project in Jiangsu,Chin

The Administrative Committee of Changshu National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone has officially issued an approval, clearing the environmental impact assessment (EIA) document for Jiangsu Zenergy Battery Technologies Group Co., Ltd.’s intelligent flexible manufacturing project for new sodium-ion batteries. This landmark project, with a total investment of RMB 10 billion and a planned annual capacity of 50 GWh sodium-ion batteries, has secured the critical compliance approval for construction, marking a substantive step forward in the company’s RMB 10-billion sodium-ion battery capacity buildout.

Located in Changshu High-Tech Zone, the project involves the acquisition of 494,638 square meters of land and is divided into three major functional zones.

  1. Core production plant: Upon completion, it will deliver an annual sodium-ion battery capacity of 50 GWh, supported by integrated R&D and testing systems.
  2. Electrode production lines: The facility will produce 145 million square meters of cathode electrodes and 154 million square meters of anode electrodes per year, with supporting R&D and testing infrastructure.
  3. The remaining land parcel is reserved for staff activity centers and shift dormitories, with no production activities to be carried out here.

The project represents a key expansion of Zenergy’s energy storage footprint in Changshu. Back in March 2026, the company signed an investment agreement for its RMB 10-billion long-duration energy storage lithium battery project. With the sodium-ion battery project now approved, Zenergy will build a dual-product portfolio of “lithium batteries + sodium-ion batteries”, covering the full spectrum of energy storage scenarios from short-term peak shaving to long-duration power supply. Phase II capacity is scheduled to come online by the end of 2027.

As a Hong Kong-listed battery manufacturer, Zenergy has posted robust business growth in recent years. It recorded revenue of RMB 8.101 billion and net profit of RMB 809 million in 2025, representing a year-on-year surge of 788.4%. In H1 2026, its revenue reached RMB 5.44 billion, and the company climbed to 5th place nationwide in terms of domestic passenger vehicle power battery installation volume.

Sodium-ion batteries serve as the company’s second major growth engine. In H1 2026, Zenergy’s sodium-ion battery business achieved revenue of RMB 15.1 million, rising by 276.6% year-on-year. Its sodium-ion products are mainly exported to the EU, deployed in scenarios such as AIDC computing centers and grid-side peak shaving and valley filling.

On the technology front, Zenergy is advancing two sodium-ion battery technical routes simultaneously: polyanionic and layered oxide systems. The polyanionic chemistry targets long-cycle-life and high-power energy storage, achieving over 10,000 charge-discharge cycles. The layered oxide route focuses on high energy density, with cell development capability exceeding 180 Wh/kg. Product iteration continues to accelerate:

the firm has completed the development of 162 Ah sodium-ion cell samples, plans to launch 180 Ah cells within the year, and will kick off R&D on large-capacity 350 Ah sodium-ion cells in the second half of the year.
