Sungrow, global supplier of PV inverters and energy storage systems, and ERS Energy, a top Malaysian solar EPC firm, have achieved a key milestone in their strategic partnership, securing a combined 1 GWh portfolio of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across Malaysia and the Philippines. The signing ceremony underscores the expanding cooperation between the two firms to address evolving grid and renewable energy requirements in Southeast Asia.
Malaysia: Boosting Grid Stability and Solar Integration
The 441 MWh, 4-hour MyBeST project in Bahau, Malaysia, will be delivered with ERS Energy acting as EPC. It is part of Malaysia’s national large-scale BESS programme spearheaded by the Energy Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Tenaga, ST).
As Malaysia scales up renewable capacity, utility-scale storage plays a vital role in balancing power supply and demand. The BESS stores excess power and releases it during peak periods, improving grid flexibility and accommodating higher volumes of intermittent renewable power. The 441 MWh asset will reinforce grid stability, raise solar integration levels and cut dependence on fossil-fuel peaking plants, supporting Malaysia’s shift to a more flexible and resilient power network.
Philippines: Grid-Forming Technology and Flexible Power Trading
Sungrow and ERS Energy are jointly developing a 556 MWh, 4-hour BESS project for ACEN in the Philippines, where ERS Energy serves as EPC.
A standout feature of this project is its grid-forming capability, which delivers active voltage and frequency support to the grid. The asset will join the Philippines’ Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), allowing power to be stored and dispatched based on market signals. This market-driven operation optimises the utilisation of stored energy and builds a more responsive, dependable power system.
Customised Storage Solutions for Diverse Market Demands
The two projects showcase how energy storage can be customised to meet distinct local requirements: grid flexibility and renewable integration in Malaysia, plus market participation and grid-forming support in the Philippines, bringing multi-layer value across the power ecosystem.
“The question for Southeast Asia is no longer whether we can generate more renewable energy, but whether our power systems are ready to support it,” said Michael Ruan, Southeast Asia Director of Sungrow. “That is where energy storage makes the difference. Together with ERS Energy, we are helping build the flexibility and resilience needed to unlock more renewable energy and deliver reliable power for communities and businesses across the region.”
Moving forward, Sungrow will continue to equip partners throughout Southeast Asia with advanced energy storage solutions to reinforce grids, boost renewable integration and build a more resilient energy future.
