PV Magazine reports BYD will invest BRL 500 million to build industrial infrastructure for battery energy storage system (BESS) production in Brazil. The capital will be deployed gradually in line with market demand to establish local BESS manufacturing capacity.

Nelson Stanisci, Director of Energy Storage at BYD Brasil, stated the investment covers full infrastructure for domestic BESS manufacturing and will scale up as market needs grow. The strategy features phased supply chain localization: BYD plans to source as many components as possible within Brazil, foster local suppliers and train specialized workforce. The new manufacturing line is projected to create 300–400 direct jobs initially.

The investment supports BYD’s in-country operations and does not involve acquisition of third-party BESS assets at this stage. Rather than delivering full-project solutions alone, BYD intends to build a broad partner ecosystem including investors, utilities and system integrators. BYD will focus on supplying storage technology, hardware and battery expertise, while partners develop tailored commercial models such as BESS-as-a-service and on-site project delivery for end customers.

While detailed production capacity figures remain undisclosed, the facility is designed to meet a large share of Brazil’s projected storage demand, including volumes from the upcoming Power Capacity Reserve Auction (LRCAP). The plant will engineer and manufacture modules and storage systems for projects of varying sizes, with potential to serve broader Latin American markets.

BYD identifies two core growth drivers for Brazilian BESS: grid flexibility required by expanding solar and wind generation, plus demand from large energy consumers such as mining and agribusiness, where energy security and power cost optimisation are priorities. Commercial & industrial storage and behind-the-meter systems paired with on-site renewables also represent key opportunities.

BYD already has operational storage assets in Brazil, including a 1.26 MVA /1.36 MWh BESS paired with a PV plant in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, co-developed with Cemig and Alsol Energia Renováveis. The operational experience forms a foundation for scaling its Brazilian storage footprint.

Local manufacturing sits at the heart of BYD’s long-term strategy to navigate Brazil’s evolving storage regulatory framework. The firm highlighted Normative Ordinance No.136 from the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) as a milestone bringing greater regulatory clarity to the sector. Stanisci emphasised that local supplier development, workforce training and scale production are essential for Brazil’s domestic storage industry to keep pace with market expansion.

BYD said Brazil’s high-renewable power mix, large electricity grid and rising flexibility needs create favourable conditions for energy storage adoption. The company aims to help build Brazil’s domestic BESS industry and participate in its development from the early stage.
