10GWh Strategic Partnership Signed: HINA BATTERY × VOLTA for Korean Energy Storage Market

On September 4, HINA BATTERY announced that it had officially signed a strategic cooperation agreement with South Korea-based VOLTA Co., Ltd. on September 2, marking a significant deepening of their partnership in sodium-ion batteries. At the heart of the agreement is a five-year long-term supply deal for 10 GWh of sodium-ion batteries.

This builds on their earlier collaboration on a 15 MWh energy-storage project covering utility-scale, commercial and industrial, and residential applications.Under the partnership, HINA BATTERY will contribute its strengths in cell technology and manufacturing, while VOLTA will handle system integration and market promotion in South Korea.

Kwangwoon University will serve as the technical validation partner, providing R&D and testing support. Together, the three parties aim to establish a complete commercial value chain—from battery cells to fully integrated systems—serving diverse energy-storage scenarios, including utility-scale, commercial-industrial, and residential applications.According to HINA BATTERY, the scale-up from 15 MWh to 10 GWh represents not only a major capacity expansion but also a key milestone in the company’s internationalization strategy.

By using South Korea as a strategic gateway, HINA BATTERY is partnering with VOLTA to introduce Chinese sodium-ion battery solutions to the global green-energy market.Public information shows that HINA BATTERY Co., Ltd., founded in 2017, is a high-tech enterprise focused on the research, development, and production of next-generation sodium-ion battery energy-storage systems.

Drawing on research achievements from the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the company is led by Academician Chen Liquan—often referred to as the “Father of China’s Lithium-ion Batteries”—and Researcher Hu Yongsheng from the same institute.

It holds fully independent intellectual property rights covering the entire sodium-ion battery technology stack.Product portfolio highlights: Power batteries: The Haixing solution for commercial vehicles, designed for short-haul and logistics applications (alongside products such as the MP200), delivers an energy density of 165 Wh/kg, supports fast charging in 20–25 minutes, and enables high-rate discharge even at low temperatures.

Energy-storage batteries: Models including the HE240 and NE170 are deployed in large-scale energy storage, frequency regulation, and lithium-sodium hybrid systems. Multiple projects at the hundred-MWh scale have already been commissioned. The products meet rigorous international standards, including IEC 62619 (energy-storage safety), UN 38.3 (transport safety), RoHS, and REACH, ensuring compliance for global markets. Starting batteries: The MP10 cylindrical starting battery enables reliable one-click starts at –40 °C and offers a cycle life exceeding 10,000 cycles.

HINA BATTERY’s products are widely used in low-speed electric vehicles (including e-bikes), new-energy passenger cars, commercial vehicles (such as electric heavy-duty and mining trucks), and large-scale energy-storage projects. The company has established partnerships with JAC Motors, Tongli Heavy Industry, and several central and state-owned enterprises.
