ARENA Hits 100 Community Battery Milestone, Unveils New Funding for National Rollout

Australia’s Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has marked a key milestone by deploying the 100th community battery under its national Community Batteries Funding Initiative, accelerating the country’s household solar and energy transition progress.

The initiative is a core component of the Australian federal government’s AUD 200 million Community Batteries for Household Solar program, with AUD 171 million of the total funding allocated to ARENA for project delivery and industry advancement.

Acting CEO Chris Faris stated that the 100-battery milestone reflects growing industry and market confidence in community batteries as a critical solution for Australia’s energy transition. These community-scale batteries enable households with rooftop solar systems to store excess daytime power generation and deploy it during peak electricity demand periods, maximizing the value of residential solar assets and optimizing household energy utilization.

Beyond infrastructure deployment, the program is accumulating valuable empirical data covering battery operational performance, project costs, viable business models, end-user benefits and grid system impacts. The data insights are designed to drive the faster commercial scaling and widespread adoption of community batteries across Australia.

Concurrent with the centennial battery milestone, ARENA announced AUD 23.2 million in new funding for three cutting-edge projects under the initiative’s second funding round, targeting expanded coverage across regional and metropolitan areas.

The YES Group Regional Community Batteries Project will secure AUD 10.29 million to install 14 community batteries across regional South Australia and New South Wales. Ausgrid Network’s Community Battery Scale-up project will receive AUD 8 million for the deployment of 21 batteries throughout Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter region. Meanwhile, the City of Newcastle Innovative Battery Solutions Project will gain AUD 5 million to roll out community batteries integrated with embedded solar networks for optimized local energy circulation.

The latest milestone and funding expansion come amid robust growth in Australia’s battery storage sector at both residential and grid levels. National home battery installation volumes have nearly tripled year on year since the launch of the federal Cheaper Home Batteries scheme in mid-2025. Additionally, the Clean Energy Finance Corp. has committed AUD 100 million to boost the development of distribution-connected battery storage projects nationwide.

Industry research highlights that while rooftop solar and residential batteries are meeting an increasing share of household electricity needs, large-scale energy storage facilities and upgraded grid infrastructure remain indispensable to support Australia’s ongoing shift toward distributed power generation and ensure stable energy system operation.
