AboitizPower, through its subsidiary Therma Marine Inc. (TMI), has officially broken ground on its second hybrid Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte.

The 48-megawatt system will be integrated with TMI’s Mobile 2 oil-fired power facility, creating a hybrid solution designed to support the evolving energy demands of the Mindanao grid.

Targeted for commissioning by Q2 2026, the Nasipit BESS will enhance the grid’s flexibility and stability through ancillary services, ensuring faster response to demand fluctuations. This project builds on the success of the Philippines’ first hybrid BESS, commissioned at TMI Mobile 1 in Maco, Davao de Oro.

“Once completed, the Nasipit BESS project will help enable more grid stability and support the growing share of renewable energy in our grid. It’s a smart solution for a smarter energy landscape,” said Ronaldo Ramos, COO for Operated Assets at AboitizPower’s Transition Business Group.

The hybrid system merges conventional oil-fired generation with cutting-edge battery technology, allowing for rapid power injection into the grid — a critical feature in maintaining frequency and service reliability, especially for island-based grids like Mindanao.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by local government officials, including Agusan del Norte Governor Maria Angelica Rosedell Malbas Amante, Vice Governor Enrico Corvera, and Nasipit Mayor Roscoe Democrito Borja Plaza, along with representatives from project partner Shandong Electric Power Engineering Consulting Institute.

As the Philippines continues its shift toward a balanced, low-carbon energy mix, projects like Nasipit BESS reflect the growing role of hybrid infrastructure in bridging traditional baseload power with renewable energy integration.
