China strongly opposes this move: US Adds Dozens of Chinese Energy, Tech Firms to Military Company Blacklist

The United States government has updated its restricted entity list, adding a batch of influential Chinese enterprises specializing in energy storage, solar power, technology and other sectors to its designated Chinese military-associated company roster, further escalating its commercial restrictions targeting Chinese businesses.

Officially updated and released on June 9 by US Deputy Secretary of Defense Stephen A. Steinberg, the updated list covers a spectrum of well-known Chinese corporations across multiple industries. The highlighted enterprises include leading solar and energy storage players such as CATL, China Three Gorges Corporation, EVE Energy, JA Solar and Trina Solar. Tech and automotive giants Huawei and BYD are also included in the latest round of additions.

In accordance with relevant US federal laws, the US Department of Defense is prohibited from conducting any business transactions or purchasing products from all listed entities, with the official ban set to take effect starting from 2027. All listed companies, whether operating in the US market directly or indirectly, are subject to the restrictive regulatory measures.

Besides energy and high-tech enterprises, the updated blacklist also incorporates other prominent Chinese organizations, namely e-commerce retailer Alibaba, China Electronics Corporation and China General Nuclear Power Corporation. Overall, the restricted firms mainly operate in core fields including energy development, advanced technology, national security and aerospace.

US authorities explained that the restriction is imposed over alleged ties between these listed companies and Chinese state institutions. This regulatory move is regarded as a crucial part of the United States’ intensified crackdown on trade and business cooperation with China in recent years, creating new barriers for bilateral industrial and commercial exchanges.

At the regular press conference of the Foreign Ministry on June 9, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian responded to the news that the US Department of Defense had added 188 Chinese companies to its list of China Military-Industrial Complex Companies:

"China has always firmly opposed the US side’s overstretching the concept of national security, drawing up various discriminatory lists and wantonly suppressing Chinese enterprises. We urge the US to correct its wrong practices and stop its unreasonable suppression of Chinese companies. China will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate and lawful rights and interests of Chinese enterprises."
