Rolls-Royce Power Systems has secured a key contract with Baltic renewable energy developer Sunly to deliver a total of 490 MWh of utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity across four projects in Latvia.
Under the agreement, Rolls-Royce will deploy its advanced mtu EnergyPack containerized BESS solutions, alongside its intelligent battery management software platform EnergetIQ. The first hybrid energy park integrating mtu EnergyPack storage units and solar panels is scheduled for commissioning in Valmiera, Latvia, in 2027.
Sunly stressed the strategic importance of partnering with a European BESS supplier for its Baltic projects. As highlighted by Sunly CEO Priit Lepasepp, regional compliance and security standards were central to the partnership decision. “We need to meet strict cybersecurity requirements,” Lepasepp noted. “It was therefore crucial for us to find a European partner who has already demonstrated expertise in Latvia.” A Sunly spokesperson confirmed the requirements align with the European Union’s NIS2 Directive for network and information system security.
Beyond the Latvian portfolio, the two parties have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to expand their strategic cooperation into Estonia, planning a 300 MWh energy storage project in Risti.
The Baltic region has emerged as a core growth market for Rolls-Royce Power Systems. Upon the completion of its ongoing regional projects, the company will have deployed over 1.5 GWh of energy storage capacity across the Baltics, solidifying its local market footprint.
Andreas Görtz, President of the Mobile and Sustainable Business Unit at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, commented on the partnership’s strategic value. “Together with Sunly, we are supplying large-scale battery storage systems that will play a crucial role in strengthening grid stability and energy security in the Baltics,” Görtz said. He also emphasised that Rolls-Royce’s single-point cooperation model effectively reduces project risks and operational complexity, while ensuring stable and profitable long-term performance for partners.
