Vélez Sarsfield Stadium Goes Green with New Rooftop PV Plant

Argentine football side Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield has put a rooftop solar photovoltaic facility into service atop its José Amalfitani Stadium in Buenos Aires, marking a landmark renewable energy upgrade for the iconic sports venue.

Built by local firm Coral Energía, the 120 kW rooftop array uses 210 Trina Solar bifacial panels across 1,250 square metres of roof space. Running on a 380V setup paired with intelligent inverters for automatic energy control and lower upkeep costs, the installation is projected to churn out around 180 MWh of clean power per year. The output can cover 15% to 20% of total power use for the stadium and club offices and slash the sports compound’s daily electricity demand by 20%–25%. Besides football fixtures, the site hosts education, sports training and commercial operations.

Licensed under Argentina’s Distributed Generation Law 27,424, the PV setup follows the country’s distributed generation rules. Vélez consumes on-site generated power and exports excess electricity to grid operator Edesur to earn feed-in remuneration.

Funded via a sponsorship and barter advertising deal alongside partner Grupo Corven, the nearly USD 200,000 project costs the football club no upfront cash payment. At the launch event, club president Fabián Berlanga revealed plans to expand solar deployment to the club’s Olympic Village training centre. Management framed the rooftop solar scheme as a replicable benchmark for other sports clubs across Argentina to adopt renewable power solutions.
