Detroit-based utility DTE Energy has secured a major battery energy storage systems (BESS) supply deal with LG Energy Solution Vertech, marking a pivotal US$1.6 billion investment to strengthen Michigan’s power grid resilience and accelerate renewable energy adoption across the state.

The comprehensive supply agreement encompasses eight BESS projects with a combined capacity of 1.5 GW/6 GWh, scheduled for full delivery over a two-year timeline by both parties’ confirmation. DTE Energy projects the initiative will yield a total economic impact of US$2.3 billion for Michigan’s local economy. Critically, the projects will sustain 1,800 direct jobs at LG Energy Solution’s manufacturing facility in Holland, Michigan, plus over 350 additional employment roles in construction and ongoing operations, injecting robust momentum into the state’s job market and industrial development.

While DTE Energy has not disclosed the specific locations and detailed scope of the eight new BESS projects, the major power provider serving around two million Michigan customers currently owns only one operational battery storage asset — a 14 MW/56 MWh BESS project launched in 2025. The new large-scale portfolio will substantially expand the company’s energy storage capacity, filling a key gap in its clean energy infrastructure layout.

Joi Harris, President and CEO of DTE Energy, emphasized the strategic and economic value of the landmark partnership. “DTE is committed to building a bright future for Michigan. By working with LG Energy Solution Vertech to bring more battery storage online through their Holland, Michigan manufacturing facility, we’re keeping Michigan at the forefront of technology and economic opportunity – creating good-paying jobs in communities while driving responsible growth, improving reliability for our customers and investing in clean energy solutions,” Harris stated.

Under the deal, LG Energy Solution will supply battery cells produced from its Michigan manufacturing base, as well as other production facilities across the United States and Canada to support the full project portfolio. Jaehong Park, CEO and President of LG Energy Solution Vertech, expressed enthusiasm about the in-state collaborative initiative. “Michigan is a key US manufacturing region for our company, where many of our colleagues live and work. We’re thrilled to work with DTE to bring Michigan-made energy storage to our communities,” Park remarked.

The new investment builds on DTE Energy’s long-term grid improvement and clean energy investment endeavors. In 2025, the company invested nearly US$4 billion in upgrading electric reliability infrastructure, an effort that helped its customers achieve the best power supply reliability record in nearly two decades. Of the total 2025 investment, approximately US$2.9 billion was deployed within Michigan to advance local energy system upgrades.

The partnership also further solidifies LG Energy Solution Vertech’s expanding footprint in the U.S. energy storage market. Earlier in 2025, the firm signed a 5 GWh BESS supply agreement with Qcells, building on a 4.8 GWh deal finalized in 2024, reflecting its growing long-term strategic partnerships and dominant position in the fast-growing U.S. battery storage sector.
