FQM Partners with Chariot and Total Eren on 430 MW Renewable Energy Project in Zambia

First Quantum Minerals (FQM), one of Zambia’s largest mining companies, is taking a major step toward clean energy by partnering with Chariot and Total Eren to develop a 430 MW renewable energy project.

Valued at around $500 million, the project will consist of a 230 MW solar power plant and a 200 MW wind farm, with the main purpose of supplying electricity to FQM’s Kansanshi and Sentinel mining operations.

This move is part of FQM’s plan to reduce its carbon emissions by 30% by 2025. Zambia’s mining sector has long relied on hydroelectric power from the national grid. However, recent droughts have caused water levels to drop, resulting in power shortages and electricity rationing.

To address this challenge, FQM is investing in its own renewable energy sources. Solar power will be used during the day, while wind energy will support operations at night, ensuring a stable and continuous power supply.

The project is also expected to benefit Zambia as a whole. By generating its own electricity, FQM will reduce pressure on Zesco, the national utility. This will make more power available for homes, schools, and small businesses, helping to ease the ongoing energy crisis.

In addition, the project is likely to create over 1,200 jobs during the construction phase, with an emphasis on hiring local workers. This will support economic growth and provide new opportunities for communities in the region.

Government officials have welcomed the initiative, stating that it supports Zambia’s Vision 2030 goals and helps diversify the country’s energy sources. The project is regarded as a strong example of how private companies can contribute to clean energy development while supporting national growth.
