Germany Launches 475MW Solar Innovation Tender with Focus on Smaller Projects

The Bundesnetzagentur has launched a new innovation tender aimed at awarding 475MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity, with results expected by May.

Project developers must submit their bids by 4 May, a slight extension from the original 1 May deadline due to the public holiday. The maximum bid price for this round has been set at €0.0713/kWh (US$0.063/kWh).

This latest tender places a clear emphasis on smaller utility-scale solar projects. Developers are invited to bid for installations of up to 20MW in capacity. While bids for projects as large as 50MW are permitted, these projects must first secure approval under the Solarpaket I reforms introduced in 2024, with a deadline of 30 April.

In a continued push to integrate renewable energy with land use, the tender also supports projects on agricultural land. Developers can submit proposals for agrivoltaics (agriPV) systems, provided the country’s total installed agriPV capacity remains below 80GW. As of 31 January 2026, Germany had 16.5GW of agriPV capacity in operation, leaving significant room for further expansion.

The maximum bid price in this tender is slightly higher than the highest awarded bids in the previous auction, which concluded in February. That round allocated 2.4GW of solar capacity, with a ceiling price of €0.053/kWh and an average awarded price of €0.050/kWh.

The new tender reflects Germany’s ongoing efforts to diversify its solar deployment strategy, encouraging both innovation and the growth of mid-sized and hybrid solar projects.
