Back-Contact Solar Modules Gain Market Share in Switzerland

The market share of back-contact (BC) solar module manufacturers in Switzerland has risen sharply between 2023 and 2025, according to a new report by the Bern University of Applied Sciences and Swiss software company Eturnity.
The Photovoltaik Barometer 2026 report shows that in 2025, Chinese BC module producers Aiko Solar and LONGi together captured more than 50% of the Swiss market, with Aiko Solar holding a slightly larger share. Other leading players included TOPCon-focused manufacturers such as JinkoSolar, Trina Solar, and Switzerland-based Megasol.
In 2024, LONGi and Aiko Solar held market shares comparable to Trina Solar and JinkoSolar, with the four companies collectively accounting for nearly 70% of Switzerland’s solar module market. A year earlier, in 2023, Aiko Solar had yet to enter the Swiss market, while LONGi was primarily supplying TOPCon modules.
“The Swiss market is almost entirely a rooftop market,” said Christof Bucher, one of the report’s authors. “As PV module costs now sometimes account for less than 10% of total project costs, module efficiency has become a critical factor in technology selection. As the impact of module pricing on the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) declines, the importance of efficiency increases.”
Bucher noted that Switzerland is not necessarily showing a direct preference for BC technology itself, but rather for high-efficiency modules. While this distinction may appear subtle—given that the highest efficiencies currently coincide with back-contact designs—the broader trend reflects a focus on maximizing system performance rather than adopting a specific module type.
