The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) of Bahrain has issued a tender for the development of a 100 MW solar power plant in Bilaj Al Jazayer, located on the southwest coast of the kingdom.
The Bilaj Al Jazayer Independent Power Project (BAJ Solar IPP) will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, following a build-own-operate (BOO) structure.
Interested developers have until December 28 to submit their bids. The project’s commercial operation date (COD) is targeted for September 30, 2027.
The initiative marks another step in Bahrain’s broader effort to expand renewable energy deployment and diversify its energy mix. The kingdom aims to commission 255 MW of solar capacity by the end of 2025, supported by mechanisms such as net metering, utility-scale tenders, and a renewable energy mandate for new buildings.
Looking ahead, Bahrain’s 2030 renewable energy target envisions a total of 700 MW of generation capacity from solar, wind, and waste-to-energy sources.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Bahrain’s installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity stood at 66 MW as of December 2024, highlighting the country’s ambition to accelerate solar development in the coming years.
