Apple is expanding its renewable energy initiatives across Europe, with new solar and wind projects underway in Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, and Romania as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
The projects are expected to add 650 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity to European power grids and generate more than one million megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean electricity annually for Apple users by the end of the decade. A newly operational solar array in Spain has also been brought online to contribute to this effort.
Apple said its investment in these projects will unlock over USD 600 million in financing, advancing the company’s global renewable energy strategy under the Apple 2030 initiative.
Clean Power for Apple Users
Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, Lisa Jackson, said the projects reflect the company’s broader mission to ensure its products are powered by clean energy.
“By 2030, we want our users to know that all the energy it takes to charge their iPhone or power their Mac is matched with clean electricity,” Jackson said. “Our new projects in Europe will help us achieve our ambitious Apple 2030 goal, while contributing to healthy communities, thriving economies, and secure energy sources across the continent.”
Major Projects Across Europe
By 2030, Apple’s European clean energy portfolio is projected to contribute approximately 3,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity each year. Key projects include:
· Greece: A 110 MW solar project, supported through a long-term power purchase agreement.
· Italy: A 129 MW portfolio of solar and wind developments currently under construction.
· Poland: A 40 MW solar installation aimed at helping decarbonize one of Europe’s most carbon-intensive grids.
· Romania: A 99 MW wind farm in Galați County developed by Nala Renewables, with Apple set to purchase power through a long-term agreement.
· Latvia: A 110 MW solar farm, secured under one of the country’s first corporate power purchase agreements.
Global Renewable Energy Commitment
Beyond customer energy use, Apple and its suppliers now support more than 19 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity worldwide — enough to power the company’s global corporate operations and manufacturing supply chain.
As Apple moves toward its 2030 target, the expansion of its renewable projects across Europe underscores the company’s role in driving corporate sustainability and supporting the continent’s transition to clean energy.
