Malaysia’s Sarawak Energy Berhad has announced a new rebate program for homeowners looking to install rooftop solar PV systems.
The state-owned utility, which is the sole power provider for Sarawak, said the subsidies will be available for systems operating under the country’s recently upgraded net energy metering (NEM) program. The incentive is designed to encourage greater uptake of solar power at the residential level.
Under the scheme, systems of up to 3.5 kW in capacity will qualify for rebates of up to MYR 8,000 ($1,905). Installations ranging between 3.5 kW and 6 kW will receive MYR 10,000, while larger systems between 6 kW and 50 kW will be eligible for up to MYR 12,000.
“The subsidy applies only to successful NEM installations from 2026 under the ‘Domestic Tariff’ category for landed residential properties,” Sarawak Energy said in a statement. “It is limited to one installation per account holder and excludes households with existing solar PV systems.”
According to Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), around 1.7 GW of PV capacity is currently in operation under the NEM program, with an additional 595 MW under development.
Sarawak Energy is also scaling up its broader solar portfolio. The utility has a total generation capacity of 5.9 GW, largely from hydro and thermal plants, but aims to expand this to 10 GW by 2030, with new capacity to come primarily from hydropower, solar, and biomass.
In November 2024, the company signed a joint study agreement with Abu Dhabi-based Masdar and Malaysian developer Gentari for the development of a large-scale floating solar project.
