Italian power producer EP Produzione has signed an agreement with Chinese inverter and storage specialist Sungrow to build a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Trapani, Sicily, based on Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 technology.

The two-hour, 100 MW/220 MWh system will feature 44 units of PowerTitan 2.0, marking the product’s first installation in Italy.

At a press event to inaugurate Sungrow’s new Italian office, Emilio Manzoni, Sungrow’s Head of PV and BESS, highlighted the innovation behind the PowerTitan 2.0 platform: “This is the first battery in the world capable of outputting directly into AC, thanks to integrated string inverters within the container. Its modularity is complete and its energy density superior — ideal for Italy, where high land costs demand compact, high-performance solutions.”

The Trapani BESS will support the flexibility and stability of the Sicilian grid, with applications including frequency regulation, peak shaving, and grid balancing in conjunction with renewable energy generation.

Luca Alippi, CEO of EP Produzione, said this will be the company’s third electrochemical storage project in Italy“Storage systems are a key component of the technology mix required for the energy transition. For this reason, we are working to expand our pipeline.”

The PowerTitan 2.0 architecture integrates advanced safety systems, certified after large-scale combustion tests. Sungrow emphasized that its all-in-one AC-DC design, including pre-assembled battery modules and PCS units, simplifies integration and significantly reduces installation time.

EP Produzione, part of European energy group Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH), operates around 5.2 GW of capacity in Italy across six thermoelectric power plants.
