Terna Announces 2027 Capacity Market Auction Results: 43 GW Awarded Across Italy

Italy’s transmission system operator, Terna, has released the results of its capacity market auction for the 2027 delivery year, held on February 26. The auction allocated a total of 43 GW of capacity, amounting to more than €1.847 billion.


Of the total awarded capacity, 38.04 GW came from existing sources, 0.59 GW from new capacity, and 4.36 GW from foreign suppliers. Across eight regions, the nationwide allocation reached 38,047 MW, with the North receiving the largest share of 22,063 MW. The enhancement premium for each region was set at €47,000 per MW per year.


New capacity allocations totaled 594 MW, with the North receiving the largest portion at 458 MW. Other allocations included Sicily (13 MW), the South (7 MW), the Central North (35 MW), and the Central South (81 MW). The enhancement premium for new capacity in this auction was €47,000 per MW per year, compared to €56,160 per MW per year in the previous round.


Foreign capacity awards amounted to 4,365 MW, with the North receiving 4,200 MW at €7,199 per MW per year. The South was allocated 52 MW at €6,500 per MW per year, while the Central South secured 113 MW at €5,579 per MW per year.


Following the auction, some participants have begun announcing contracts. Andy Kinsella, CEO and founding partner of Irish company Aer Soléir, shared on LinkedIn that the company successfully secured a 15-year capacity contract for its 250 MW Rondisonne battery storage project in Piedmont, Italy.
