Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has launched a tender for the development of three solar photovoltaic (PV) plants at key airports across the country. The proposed projects will be located at Tambo International Airport, King Shaka International Airport, and Cape Town International Airport.
The Tambo International Airport project will involve designing and constructing a 5,000 kW solar PV plant, with a separate five-year maintenance contract. The design of the plant will also need to accommodate future plans for a battery backup system. The construction will take place within the airport’s land site, and all contractors will be required to obtain permits for their equipment and staff.
At King Shaka International Airport, the project will involve the installation of a 2,000 kW roof-mounted solar PV plant, along with a separate five-year maintenance contract. Additionally, contractors must provide a training program for engineers, equipping the airport’s maintenance staff with the skills needed to operate and maintain the system.
The final tender, for Cape Town International Airport, is for the design and construction of a 2,500 kW solar PV plant. Contractors will be expected to provide ongoing monitoring and improvements to the system, as the technology will be new to the airport.
