Lucky Cement is preparing to commission Pakistan’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS), a 20.7 MW/22.7 MWh installation located at its Pezu plant in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Integrated with the company’s 34 MW captive solar power system, the project represents a major milestone in the country’s energy transition.
The system is being developed in partnership with Reon Energy, using battery technology from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), the world’s leading lithium-ion battery manufacturer.
“A price collapse in wind, solar and batteries has made the payback periods very competitive,” said Hassan Mazhar Rizvi, General Manager for Power Generation at Lucky Cement. “This will ensure smooth operations and increase our solar and wind portions.”
The BESS is engineered to manage solar intermittency, offer spinning reserve, and enable the shutdown of fossil fuel generators during daylight hours—a significant step toward grid independence, decarbonization, and operational resilience for industrial users in Pakistan.
