UK Government Unveils Solar Roadmap, Targeting 45-57GW Solar Capacity by 2030

On June 30, the UK government released its "Solar Roadmap," outlining the direction and goals for the nation’s solar industry over the next five years.

The roadmap first sets installation targets: it aims to increase the UK’s total solar capacity from the current 18 gigawatts (GW) to 45–47 GW by 2030. If rooftop solar deployment accelerates, this target could rise further to 54–57 GW.

Second, the UK will aggressively scale up rooftop solar installations, targeting an expansion from the current 1.8 million households to 9 million by 2030. This is projected to save a typical British household around £500 annually in energy costs.

Bolstered by policy support, the solar industry is expected to sustain approximately 35,000 jobs by 2030—doubling the current workforce.

To achieve these goals, the roadmap proposes concrete policies, including:

Streamlining approval processes;

Implementing fundamental reforms to grid connection procedures;

Providing financial support to reduce installation costs;

Boosting domestic manufacturing;

Safeguarding labor rights and consumer safety.
