JUWI Renewable Energies, the South African subsidiary of German construction group JUWI, has signed two solar module supply agreements with Chinese manufacturer JA Solar to support a 220MW solar photovoltaic (PV) portfolio.

Under the agreement, JA Solar will deliver approximately 420,000 solar panels for two utility-scale PV projects set to supply power to major energy users including Glencore, Sasol, and Air Liquide.

The first project, the 100MW Sonvanger Solar Plant—developed in partnership with Pele Green Energy—will supply electricity to Glencore. It is located about 4 kilometers southwest of Theunissen in South Africa’s Free State Province.

The second project, the 120MW Paarde Valley PV2 facility, is part of a larger 260MW renewable energy initiative in the De Aar region. Developed in collaboration with TotalEnergies, Mulilo, and the Reatile Group, it will provide clean energy to Sasol and Air Liquide.

Both plants are scheduled to begin operations in late 2026 and together will contribute a total of 220MW of renewable capacity to South Africa’s grid.

Richard Doyle, Managing Director of JUWI Renewable Energies, said the projects are aligned with South Africa’s target of installing 30GW of renewable energy by 2030 and will support the planned phase-out of 11GW of coal-fired power.

These projects form part of JUWI’s broader development plan announced earlier this year, which includes over ZAR6 billion (US$320 million) in new solar PV investments. Upon completion, the new plants are expected to boost the country’s total installed solar PV capacity by approximately 5%.
