Germany is planning the construction of a large-scale battery storage project named "Wertrole Battery Park" in the Münsterland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, near the Dutch border.

According to the three companies involved in planning the project – German asset manager Luxcara, utility company Trianel, and Swiss company BKW – the project has a planned total output of 900 megawatts (MW) and a total storage capacity of 1,800 megawatt-hours (MWh).

Currently, Luxcara has acquired a portion of the project with a capacity of 520 MW / 1,040 MWh. This part of the storage facility will be built on a vacant plot of land originally designated for a coal-fired power plant. Luxcara stated that grid connection capacity for this section is secured and relevant tariff agreements have been signed.

However, Luxcara did not disclose further details, such as the investment amount. Luxcara's investment will cover the development, construction, and operation of this section of the system, with construction planned to start in 2026. The project still requires approval from local authorities.

Another participant, BKW, will be responsible for the construction and operation of a section with a capacity of 300 MW / 600 MWh. BKW has explicitly stated that the investment cost for this section will exceed 200 million Euros. Its facilities will be built close to a substation, with construction planned to begin in 2026 and the target for operational commissioning set for 2028.

Trianel, as a core participant in the project, has not yet disclosed any key details regarding the capacity, investment, technical specifications, or timeline of the section it is responsible for.
