According to data from the German Solar Industry Association (BSW Solar), the installation count of balcony power plants in Germany has exceeded 1 million units. The association had previously forecasted this milestone to be reached by the end of June 2025, but it was actually surpassed by early June.

Between January and April 2025, approximately 135,000 new balcony PV systems were deployed, representing an annual growth rate of 36%. BSW Solar states that the new installations during this period added about 75% more generating capacity.

The Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) reported that 53.4 megawatts (MW) of balcony solar projects came online in April 2025 alone. The boost comes from the ease of permitting procedures in the country, starting from April 1, 2024.

“Now that solar roofs have long been standard in residential areas, the solar boom on balconies will now increasingly shape the image of inner cities. Ever broader sections of the population are benefiting from the solar energy transition,” said Carsten Körnig, BSW Solar CEO.
