The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has officially launched the bidding process for the 50-megawatt (MWac) Vajiralongkorn Dam Floating Solar Project, a key clean energy initiative located in Kanchanaburi Province. Interested parties can purchase bidding documents through EGAT’s procurement portal until June 20, 2025.
According to Mr. Thidade Eiamsai, EGAT’s Deputy Governor for Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy, the project is part of Thailand’s national strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065. Commercial operation is expected to begin in 2027. The project will deploy photovoltaic panels on the surface of the Vajiralongkorn Dam reservoir to harness solar power efficiently.
“This initiative demonstrates EGAT’s dedication to cutting carbon emissions through both offset and avoidance strategies,” said Eiamsai.
The Vajiralongkorn Dam Floating Solar Project 1 is aligned with Thailand’s Power Development Plan 2018–2037 Revision 1 (PDP2018 Rev.1) and the upcoming revised PDP. As part of a broader national program, Thailand aims to install up to 2,725 MW of floating solar capacity by 2030, utilizing reservoirs at EGAT’s hydropower facilities across the country.
EGAT’s hybrid model integrates floating solar with existing hydropower infrastructure, allowing for optimized energy production, reduced electricity costs, and improved environmental outcomes. The floating design also conserves land and helps limit water evaporation—delivering added ecological benefits.
With this project, EGAT strengthens its leadership in Thailand’s renewable energy transition, supporting the nation’s long-term goals of energy security, affordability, and sustainability.
