On May 26, Sungrow, a global leader in PV inverter and energy storage systems, and Globeleq, Africa’s leading independent power producer (IPP), have signed the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) supply and 15-year Long-Term Service Agreement Term Sheet for the 153MW/612MWh Red Sands BESS project in South Africa.

The Red Sands BESS project, part of South Africa’s first Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP), is located in the Northern Cape Province, approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Upington. Upon completion, it will become Africa’s largest standalone battery energy storage system.

Spanning approximately 5 hectares (12 acres), the project will connect to the grid via Eskom’s Garona substation. Strategically positioned to bolster South Africa’s power infrastructure, the Red Sands BESS will deliver critical services including load shifting, grid stabilization, and renewable energy integration to address ongoing energy supply challenges.

Under the agreement, Sungrow will supply its cutting-edge PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled energy storage system. Additionally, the company will provide comprehensive operation and maintenance (O&M) services under a 15-year contract with Globeleq, ensuring long-term reliability, efficiency, and optimal performance of the facility.

The Red Sands BESS project is expected to reach financial close in 2025 and commence commercial operations in 2027.
