Construction has officially begun on the largest solar power project in Bosnia and Herzegovina to date. The 125 MW solar plant will be located in Komanje Brdo, a village in the municipality of Stolac in the southern part of the country. A groundbreaking ceremony was held last week to mark the start of the project.
The solar plant is being constructed by China's Norinco International, with the entire build expected to be completed within one year. Backed by an investment of approximately €100 million (US$113.2 million), the project is set to generate 200 GWh of clean electricity annually for the next 30 years.

According to a statement from the Stolac municipal government, the city anticipates earning between BAM 3 million (US$1.7 million) and BAM 4 million annually through concessions and utility fees once the plant becomes operational.
As of the end of 2024, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s total installed solar capacity remained at 212 MW, unchanged from 2023, based on data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
In a separate development, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) launched a tender in April 2024 for the development of three new solar plants totaling 28 MW in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The deadline for applications is May 26.
